I encourage everyone to check out the 2005 NFL Football Pool taking place on this site.

The first week of football has come and gone, and sjtrout is the winner of the first week with 10 wins. As a result, he is awarded with 2 bonus points that will count toward his overall standing. bin11001010 came in at second place with 9 wins. bin11001010 is also awarded 1 bonus point for successfully making a Lone Wolfe Pick. He picked New Orleans when no other player did. That's karma for you. The bonus point will count toward his overall standing as well.

In other news, the Dallas Cowboys squeaked out a victory versus the San Diego Chargers in the final seconds of their game. The Cowboys were looking pretty rough in the beginning of the game. I watched in despair as they drew 3 penalties in a row, making their way in a backwards fashion toward their own goal line. Fortunately they caught a couple breaks and were able to stop San Diego from scoring at the 24 second mark, despite a valiant effort by Drew Brees and his Chargers.

I invite everyone to try out the new Show Picks page as well as the new Standings page, now with sorting goodness.

Remember that your worst week will be dropped from your overall score, in case you have a brain fart and forget to make your picks or just have a bad week. This also means that if you haven't participated in this year's pool yet, you can still take part and you won't be penalized too much, because this first week would be disregarded for you as it would be your worst week.

I hope everybody is enjoying the football and I hope that the football pool is adding some excitement for you. I know it does for me, otherwise, why would I be so upset about the Jets getting beat by the Chiefs?

If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right.

This post has been looked at 178 time(s).

Thanks for putting the pool together again! I'm glad I didn't bet the house this year :)

BTW, If you haven't noticed, I've changed the way I implement the "spirit" of the worst week. Before, in your worst week I just dropped it, not giving it any consideration. I found that this muddied up the statistics a bit, and I got a generally icky feeling about the way it was working.

I decided to not drop the worst week, but give you back the points that you missed in your worst week by way of bonus points, keeping your accuracy statistics intact.

I'm done monkeying around for now, but next year I will be dropping the entire concept of the worst week redemption. I am pretty good about sending out the weekly notices, and there's nothing stopping people from picking a couple weeks in a row, then coming back later to revise.

Another change will be the bonus points for winning the week. Right now, you get two (2) bonus points for winning the week. I feel that's a little too much. If you've won the week, there's a good chance that you've already gotten at least one point more than everyone else in the pool. Next year, you will be awarded one (1) point for winning the week.

One more proposed change for next year will be an entry fee. I'm not looking to make any money from the pool, but I would like to offer a prize for the winner, and my money tree has failed to grow, so I don't have a lot of extra cash laying around. The thinking is that a $5 entry fee will be sufficient to get something non-trivial for a prize or prizes.

If you were basing the modifications on this year's results, you'd 'award' the winner of the week with -2 points.
