User submitted image What’s the deal with people not having their dog on a leash? I understand if you have one of those underground electric fence systems. That is perfectly fine, as long as it works for your pooch. But since when is it acceptable for your dog to come running up to me and my dog or to my wife who is pushing our baby in the stroller? You’ll say something like, “It’s OK, my dog doesn’t bite.” To be honest, I don’t care if you think that your dog doesn’t bite. Maybe I don’t want your dog running up to me and being a pest. Maybe my dog isn’t going to respond well to some strange dog running up to us.

When I walk my dog, I have her on a leash, but I can’t do much if your dog comes running up to her. If your dog were to get hurt by mine, it would no doubt be my dog’s fault in your eyes, especially because she’s a Rottweiler. This leads me to another point. I don’t care what kind (or size) of dog you own. Unless you’ve had it genetically engineered, it has teeth and has the ability to bite.

The other day we were out on a walk and someone had their dog tied up in their front yard, but the dog had more than enough slack to reach the edge of the road, crossing the sidewalk. That means that my wife had to push the stroller out onto the street to pass by the house. In another instance, we saw a guy out running with his brown lab when someone’s poodle came running out to chase them, causing them to trip up and clearly startling the lab. He acted as if he thought he was being attacked.

If I were to let my dog loose to run up in your yard and start pushing your dog around or to jump up and lick your kid’s face, you probably wouldn’t appreciate that, so why is it acceptable for yours to do something similar when we’re walking up the street in front of your house?

Many times, when the owners come to grab their dog they will apologize profusely. This tells me that they acknowledge that this kind of behavior is not acceptable, yet they let it happen over and over. I don’t want you to apologize; I want you to exert some control over your dog. I realize that accidents happen and that animals can be unpredictable. Sometimes they just get away from you. I’m not talking about that kind of thing. I’m talking about people who are not even trying to control their animals.

For the safety of everyone, please control your dog.

I've had similar experiences walking my Great Dane. My dog is actually pretty passive with other dogs (expecially smaller ones), so little dogs will come up and lay into her and she will just stand there.

The other thing I find comical is when I walk my large dog in a development full of small dogs--I always hear 'Yip Yip Grr Yip' 'No, fluffy, No...that dog would eat you alive.' Wait, my dog isn't barking growling or showing any sign of aggression besides maybe pulling a little bit because she wants to go see what the little white puff is. Your dog is throwing an absolute fit.

Of course, as with anything, people are probably just trying to be funny, as we all do...but it makes you laugh how unorginal people can be when making comments about big dogs.
Here is a picture of my dog.

That is funny, because I hear that a lot too. A little ankle-biter, yapping away and the owner says, "...that dog would eat you..." or something to that effect. Maybe it's a little dog owner thing. I don't see a little dog and think, "Man, my dog would eat that one alive..."
