The Television Is Not Your Friend

Posted on January 18, 2007 4:24 PM

I like to tell people that I don't watch much TV. To be honest with you, I have my good days and I have my bad. I really prefer to watch movies over TV shows, but TV shows require less coordination with my familial obligations. TV is tricky. It sneaks up on me. Some evenings I realize that I started watching TV at around 7PM and 4 hours later, I'm finally turning out the light. That seems excessive to me. That's half of a normal working day, with nothing to show for it. I probably couldn't even remember what I watched the next day, without giving it a lot of thought.

Download Of The Day: SlickRun

Posted on January 15, 2007 1:31 PM

If you're like me you typically have a bunch of windows open at one time when you're working on the computer. If you are tired of minimizing all your windows to find the shortcut on the desktop or you're tired of hunting for the shortcut in the start menu, you should take a look at SlickRun. I tend to be a command-line oriented kind of person. I would rather just type something in quick over clicking through a couple of menus with the mouse. Since I have installed SlickRun, my desktop area is almost entirely empty, and I turned off the quick launch area of the task bar.

The idea behind SlickRun is that you create Magic Words that you can type in and the program you want will start up. You can even specify website URL'S and parameters for programs. I've created magic words for all my favorite Putty sessions, and when I want to check my email, I just start typing in 'gmail' You don't have to type in the whole word typically, because SlickRun will auto-complete as you type, bringing up the last used magic word that matches what you've typed in first.

Download SlickRun on the Bayden Systems website.

I was cleaning out my old email when I found this one that my wife sent to me about a week after my daughter was born. If you know me, then you know that I hate forward emails, but this one is pretty good, and it rings true for the most part.
