Jonas Brothers Perform for Halftime Show

Posted on November 28, 2008 11:56 AM

After watching the Jonas Brothers perform during halftime at the Thanksgiving Day Cowboys game yesterday, I wanted to look around and see if I could find any commentary about their performance. Besides the usual plain vanilla news blurbs, I found a guy who had a similar opinion to my own:

I have to agree with the poster when he says that they didn't sound good during the halftime performance. I don't really want to make general statements about their fans besides the one fact that mostly everyone would agree on, and that is that the majority of their fans are young girls. I will also predict that most of them will look back at when they were fans of the Jonas Brothers and laugh at themselves, much as women of my age look back at the boy bands they liked in their teens and laugh.

I am sure it is my age that makes me laugh at the antics of these boy bands and wonder at the lack of talent. Only time will tell. Remember, William Penn once said, "Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it and right is right, even if everyone is against it." 5 million screaming female teenagers doesn't make the Jonas brothers talented, it just makes them popular. Nobody is disputing whether they are "good guys" there are plenty of good guys out there that can't sing a lick. The good news is, the Jonas brothers will most likely get better, so there is a slim chance that one of them will become the next Sting, or the next Billy Joel of this teenybopper generation. As far as being good guys, I am kind of glad that it is not too out of style for a musical performer to have a "decent" image, since I have a daughter of my own...

All that being said, I did find myself cringing while I listened to Demi Lovato (who?!!!) sing my National Anthem before the game, and once again during the Jonas brothers' HT performance. It is probably a good thing that they don't usually show the halftime stuff on TV, there's only so much dog catching a frisbee though a hoop that you want to see anyway... Add/View Comments

A Cruel Twist of Fate

Posted on October 9, 2007 10:36 AM

In week #2 of the 2007 NFL season, The Philadelphia Eagles faced the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. What made the game interesting for me was the fact that I was matched up against Amy in the fantasy football. There were three players left to play on Monday night, Donovan McNabb, Brian Westbrook, and David Akers. Amy had McNabb and Westbrook, while I had David Akers on my FF team. The game couldn't have played out much better for me if I had scripted it myself. McNabb and Westbrook were marginalized while the only player on the Eagles that scored was Akers. I was ecstatic with the outcome, as I won the game in Fantasy Football, and the Eagles still lost.

Fast forward to last night. 3 weeks later the Cowboys are playing the Buffalo Bills whose defense has been ranked the worst so far in the 2007 season. In Fantasy Football, I am facing Walt whose Chicago Bears were able to not only beat the 4-0 Green Bay Packers the night before, but score some nice points for Walt in FF. Going into Monday night, I am down by 21 points, but I still have Tony Romo and Marion Barber to play. On the other hand, Walt has Nick Folk the rookie Dallas kicker. Down by 21 points doesn't look too bad considering I have the highest ranked QB in Fantasy Football, and they are playing what is supposed to be the worst defense in the league.

Could Fate resist the temptation to lay a vicious smackdown on me and my beloved Cowboys?

No.

Going into the half, Tony Romo has a total of 4 interceptions and the game is tied 10-10. Things don't look much better in the 2nd half, with Romo tossing another pick, and then later fumbling the ball, with the Bills recovering.

All in all, it was a nightmare of a game for Romo with 5 picks and 1 fumble. Meanwhile, the rookie kicker, Nick Folk is having the game of his life, kicking 4 out of 4 good kicks, the last one to win the game, even after the old icing the kicker trick! Sorry Walt, FF isn't going to give you points for that extra practice kick! Just seconds before kicking the winning field goal, Nick Folk kicked a near perfect onside kick! (Once again, no FF points for the onside kick.)

That was one of the craziest comebacks I've seen. I can't imagine what it must be like for the Buffalo Bills fans in the stadium. That stadium was packed all the way down to the final whistle. I wonder how many accidents happened on the roadways after that game, because I am sure that most of the people walking out of that stadium were in shock!

The Dallas Cowboys are still undefeated. That victory was bittersweet on a couple different levels. The good news: Cowboys are 5-0, and I picked them to win in the football pool. The bad news: They totally hosed me in Fantasy Football this week, and things are looking really scary for next week when Tom Brady, Randy Moss and the gang come to big D.

How 'Bout Them Cowboys?

Posted on March 21, 2006 1:04 PM

Sometime last year, around early November, I started working on a Photoshop. Because of all the problems that the Eagles were having with Terrell Owens, for a joke I wanted to make a picture of him wearing a Cowboys jersey. I started with some pictures of T.O. and Keyshawn Johnson trying to come up with T.O. wearing a Cowboys jersey with “81” on it. Eventually, like most of my Photoshop endeavors, I lost interest and never finished it.

I have to say that I wasn’t surprised this weekend to learn that my attempt at fiction had become reality. After hearing that the Cowboys had released Johnson just minutes after the Eagles had released Owens, I was fairly certain that the deal was done. I don’t think that anyone else was too surprised by the move. Love them or hate them, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys will always attract players with talent, no matter the risk, or the controversy.

This whole affair reminds me of when the Cowboys signed Deion Sanders. I couldn’t stand that guy and here he was on my favorite team. Once again, I will find myself cheering for a player that I despised in the past. And if they win, the victory will still be sweet, although maybe not as sweet as when it came from the likes of Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and yes, Michael Irvin. As for others in the current organization, they’re all doing their part, supporting the new addition to the team, talking about “benefit of the doubt” and playing down all the “bad press” that Owens has had in the past.

I don’t have any blinders on, and I am sure the Cowboys organization doesn’t either. I know that T.O. has had his problems in the past, and typically people don’t change. Like every other Cowboys fan, I’m hoping that the guy has learned from his mistakes.

I do know one thing. The next time the Cowboys and the Eagles take the field together, it should be very interesting.
